How to prune?
Architecture is poor and prone to failure. The tree has committed tremendous resources into growing three codominant stems originating six feet from the ground. Choose the stem in the center as the leader and reduce the height and length of the right and left stems. Several pruning cuts may be two to three inches diameter may be needed on each stem.
Class #1 - Fine Pruning: consists of the removal of dead, dying, diseased, interfering, objectionable, and weak branches (crown cleaning), as well as selective thinning to lessen wind resistance. Some deadwood up to ½ inch in diameter may remain within the main leaf area where it is not practical to remove such. Girdling roots will be monitored and removed where possible.
Class #2 - Medium Pruning: consists of the removal of dead, dying, diseased, interfering, objectionable, and weak branches (crown cleaning). Some deadwood up to one inch in diameter may remain within the leaf canopy.
Class #3 - Hazard reduction: pruning is recommended when the primary objective is to reduce the danger to a specific target, caused by visibly defined hazards in a tree, by removing dead, diseased, or obviously weak branches two inches in diameter or greater.
Class #4 - Crown Reduction Pruning: includes Structural pruning, subordinating side branches or secondary trunks to a more dominant leader, reducing canopy tops, sides, under branches, or individual limbs at appropriate lateral limbs and stems for purposes of clearance of storm damage repair. Some crown reduction pruning incorporates hazard reduction pruning.

The first priorities when pruning established trees are to reduce conditions in the tree that contribute to weakness, ensure strong tree structure by guiding future growth, and create clearance. Treating defect by reducing or thinning stems that compete with the leader, large forked limbs and those with inclusions, or aggressive (fast-growing) or long branches reduces risk by slowing their growth rate or redistributing mass.

Pruning often involves subordinating side branches or secondary trunks to a more dominant leader. This can only be achieved with reduction cuts (removing a larger trunk/branch back to a smaller side branch). In reduction cuts, the diameter of the side branch must be at least one-third the diameter of the trunk/parent branch removed. If the side branch is smaller, it becomes a heading cut.
Once this structural and clearance pruning is completed, one or more of the other pruning methods can be applied if needed to complete the job.

This weak attachment is likely to split in the future. Preventive pruning now can prevent this from happening. Reduce the length of the left hand stem so the one on the right will grow faster. Eventually the left hand stem will be removed from the tree because it is way too low on the trunk. In many cases, the lowest permanent limb on shade trees should be at least 15 feet off the ground.
